Why are dozens of people lining up at West Lake before 6 AM every day? The answer lies in a small boat arriving from other parts of the lake, carrying bags filled with treasures of fresh lotus seed pods and leaves.

Some locals even arrive as early as 3 AM to secure a spot among the 70 lucky individuals who every day get the chance to purchase three lotus seed pods and five lotus leaves for just 10 yuan. This year, the seasonal event lasts about half a month until late August, allowing hundreds of Hangzhou residents to partake in this cherished tradition.

“I’m going to use lotus leaves to make a cooling tea for the summer. You just need to dry it in the sun and then boil it. It’s easy, and the dry leaves can last for three years! ” an elderly lady in line shared. A young boy, who got his lotus seed pod, exclaimed, “I will try it right now! I’ve been waiting here since 5:20 AM!” After peeling and tasting a seed, he added, “It tastes perfect! Very soft and fresh now--just the right time to eat them!”

The lotus pods contain seeds that can be enjoyed fresh or cooked. A popular dish is lotus seed soup, which offers a light sweetness and cooling effect--perfect for hot summer days. This dessert is made by simmering lotus seeds with white fungus, red dates, and rock sugar. Sweetened lotus seeds also feature in treats like sweet red bean soup and herbal jelly. Creativity flourishes as some locals transform the pods into decorative pieces or handicrafts like cup pads!

So, seize the opportunity to become part of this beloved tradition now and savor the unique taste and culture of West Lake’s lotus treasures.
