The first phase of the wetland ecological restoration project at Beihu Caodang in Hangzhou has been completed nearly six months ahead of schedule with an area of 705,000sqm.

Beihu Caodang, also known as Tianhuangdang in ancient times, is situated in the southwestern part of Pingyao town, Yuhang district. With a thousand-year history, it serves as an essential flood detention area in the Tiaoxi Creek Basin. Known as a habitation for migratory birds, it holds the reputation of being one of the province's prime bird-watching locations.

During the restoration, 34 new birds were discovered in the wetland, including species under the national first and second-level protection. The once-degraded water area has now transformed into a thriving ecological wetland, filled with lakes, interwoven water networks, and vibrant lives.

To cater to the increasing number of bird-watching enthusiasts exploring Beihu Caodang, the area now features bird-watching stations, bird science museums, and wetland protection halls. Nine major habitat areas have been created without affecting bird nesting.

Currently, Beihu Caodang has a record of 298 species of birds, making it a wetland with the most bird species in Hangzhou. Among them, 8 are under the national first-level protection, including rare birds like white cranes, oriental white storks, and black-faced spoonbills.

Its second phase will soon begin. The restoration of Beihu Caodang marks not only the advancement in ecological protection but also an enhancement in cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for both the locals and tourists, reflecting Hangzhou's commitment to sustainable development.
