Among the list of Sino-foreign cooperative institutes and programs approved by the Ministry of Education, Zhongfa Aviation Institute of Beihang University is located in Pingyao, Yuhang district, which is adjacent to the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City.

Its establishment can be dated back to Jan 9, 2018, when Beihang University and Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile signed a memorandum of cooperation at the People's Great Hall with President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron being at present. The two universities agreed to jointly run a Sino-French aviation university in Hangzhou with the goal of becoming a world-class research university that is modern and forward-thinking.

The university plans to have a total scale of 1,260 students and the enrollment will begin this September. Each year, 180 undergraduates and 240 postgraduates will be enrolled. Additionally, it proposes to cover eleven research platforms and six schools, namely, the School of Civil Aviation, of Aerospace, of Informatics, of Engineering, of Sciences, and the International School.

Take the School of Civil Aviation as an example: it focuses on a broad range of research fields including space-air-ground integrated network and aeronautical broadband communication, air traffic management and transportation planning, avionics and satellite navigation. Besides, the school has two research platforms currently: the Air Traffic Management Academic Platform and Urban Air Mobility Joint Laboratory.
