Experiencer
By Saboor Saeed
I am a student at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, pursuing my postgraduate degree in medicines. I am currently having my outpatient practice at the Hangzhou First People Hospital, where I have gained invaluable experience and am still learning from my peers and mentors.
As a medical student, I have always been interested in pediatrics and child health. It is a field that requires a high level of empathy, patience, and dedication, and I am constantly inspired by the passion and commitment of the healthcare professionals who work in this area.
Through my practice, I have learned that there is much more to being a healthcare professional than a clinical doctor. It is about understanding the unique needs of each patient, being empathetic and compassionate, and creating an environment that fosters healing and growth. I have also learned that communication is a critical aspect of healthcare, and it is important to be able to communicate effectively and with empathy to patients and their families.
During my practice, I have also noticed some challenges faced by children and their families when visiting the hospital. One of them is the long waiting time before seeing the doctor. This waiting time can be especially difficult for children who may feel anxious or scared about their visits to the hospital. In addition, the hospital environment can be overwhelming, and some children may find it uncomfortable and uneasy.
To address these challenges, I suggested setting up a small book corner in the waiting area where children could read and calm down while waiting for their appointments. This was a simple but effective solution to engage the children and make them feel comfortable. I was thrilled when my suggestion was approved, and we were able to set up the book corner in the hospital's waiting area. The book corner has since become a popular place for the young patients. It is helpful for keeping them quiet and calm.
Apart from this initiative, I have also been involved in various other activities during my practice, such as patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. I have also assisted in surgeries and emergency cases, gaining valuable hands-on experience and developing my clinical skills. Through these practices, I value the importance of teamwork and collaboration in healthcare more than ever and understand how critical it is to have a strong support system in place to provide the best possible care to patients.
