Here come the door deities

1月22日，腊月廿三，农历小年。有一个民间年俗一直保留至今——贴门神年画，用以辞旧迎新，驱邪纳福。
On Jan 22, the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month, also known as Xiaonian (Minor New Year), we saw the continuation of a time-honored tradition: pasting door deity paintings. This custom bids farewell to the old year, wards off evil, and ushers in good fortune.
门神怎么贴？一是要成对，二是两位门神必须面对面，寓意合力同心守护家园。
How should the door deities be displayed? First, they should be in pairs. Second, the two deities must face each other, symbolizing unity in safeguarding the home.
连续七年，我们都邀请杭州青年画家王赓为都市快报·橙柿互动和Hangzhoufeel读者定制一对特别的卡通生肖门神，今年也不例外。
For seven consecutive years, we have invited Wang Geng, a young artist from Hangzhou, to design exclusive cartoon zodiac door deities for readers of City Express·City Link and Hangzhoufeel. This year is no exception.
动动手，把印在报纸上的门神剪下来，把你的专属“福蛇门神”贴上家门。一提门神总给人“老底子”的感觉？王赓说，其实，把传统的和年轻人喜欢的东西结合起来，门神也可以很时尚。
Get hands-on! Cut out the door deities printed in the newspaper and paste your exclusive “Fortune Snake Door Deities” on your front door. Does “door deities” sound antiquated? Wang believes combining traditional elements with modern aesthetics can make them trendy!
今年，王赓设计的这对蛇门神，除了延续一贯的“萌”系风格，霸气中透着几分萌态，吉祥又喜庆。
This year, the pair of snake door deities by Wang continues the adorable style with a hint of cuteness, exuding auspicious festivity.
王赓说，2025年是蛇年，蛇象征着长寿与好运，也是传说镇宅的神明，能够守护家里的安宁与美好。
Wang says that 2025 is the Year of the Snake, a symbol of longevity and good fortune. The snake is also a legendary deity believed to protect the peace and prosperity of households.
这对“蛇”门神里加上传统中国元素，再把蛇的形象可爱化，让人们能够把蛇的样子从令人生畏变为亲切可人。蛇抱着一个如意，也有事事如意的意思。除此之外，王赓还巧妙地植入了都市快报专属的“K”元素，你发现了吗？
These snake door deities incorporate traditional Chinese elements, featuring an adorable snake that transforms its image from intimidating to lovable and approachable. The snake is holding a “Ruyi” (an S-shaped traditional Chinese ornament), symbolizing that everything will go as you wish. Moreover, Wang has cleverly incorporated the logo “K” of City Express.
