In a groundbreaking development for the visually impaired, a new smart electronic guide dog has emerged, transforming the way individuals with visual disabilities navigate the world.
All it takes is a gentle tug on the leash and a vocal command to indicate the desired destination, and the intelligent guide dog will begin its journey, guiding the person to their destination.
The device gained widespread attention at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year, with many athletes praising its innovative design. One participant said, “With it guiding us, we no longer need to worry about losing our way.”
This year, Hangzhou’s electronic guide dogs have reached a new level of sophistication. A “next-generation” electronic guide dog has been developed by Westlake Robotics in the city’s Xihu district. This upgraded version not only helps users navigate by avoiding obstacles and adjusting speed but also boasts advanced features like recognizing bus stops and detecting traffic lights in real time. Furthermore, it is equipped with a voice navigation system. By simply stating their desired destination, users can have the guide dog automatically plan the optimal route and guide them directly to their destination.
This new technological advancement is a game-changer for the visually impaired, offering increased independence and mobility with ease.
There are currently around 17 million visually impaired people in China, and guide dogs have long been an essential tool for their mobility and social participation. Often referred to as “the second pair of eyes” for visually impaired individuals, guide dogs are indispensable to them.
