The winner of the 2023 Pritzker Prize in Architecture has been announced, which goes to British architect David Chipperfield, renowned for his modern minimalist style and belief that "less is more".
Established in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy, and sponsored by the Hyatt Foundation, the Pritzker Prize is the highest international award in the field of architecture.
Chipperfield's notable works in Hangzhou include the Liangzhu Museum, located in the Liangzhu Cultural Area in the city's Yuhang district.
Covering an area of 40,000 square meters, its simple yet elegant appearance reflects the harmonious integration of art and nature, history, and modernity. The Liangzhu Museum is composed of four rectangular volumes with the same width but different heights. The interior of the building volume forms multiple courtyards, weakening the boundary between the museum and its surroundings. The outer walls of the building are all made of yellow travertine, which looks like jade from a distance.
The Liangzhu area is also home to works of other two Pritzker Prize winners, Wang Shu's Hangzhou Branch of the National Archives of Publications and Culture, Tadao Anteng's Liangzhu Culture and Art Center.
Another notable works of Chipperfield in Hangzhou include the Xixi Paradise - Yuezhuang located in Hangzhou Xixi National Wetland Park, the Jiushu Apartment, adjacent to the scenic spots Nine Creeks in Misty Forest and Bamboo Lined Path at Yunxi, and the Yixiang Building located at Moganshan Road, which was selected as one of the "30 World's Greatest Buildings" in 2016.
