Int'l troupes busy on HZ stage

As several theaters in Hangzhou have recently announced their new plans for 2023, it is expected that the stage art market will see an explosive growth this year as China has resumed international travel. More international artists and troupes are coming back to the city to provide diverse and exciting performances to the audience.

The Hangzhou Grand Theater

The Hangzhou Grand Theater's new season will come up with artists and dramas from all over the world.

And Quiet Flows the Don

The St. Petersburg Masterskaya Theatre's adaptation of "And Quiet Flows the Don" is an 8-hour-long Russian drama production based on the classic novel by Mikhail Sholokhov. It was once regarded as a phenomenal epic masterpiece.

Les Misérables

The French version of Les Misérables is a musical adaptation of the classic novel by Victor Hugo. Premiered in Paris in 1980, this version of the show is considered by many to be the original and most authentic version of the musical and continues to captivate audiences with its powerful message of hope and redemption.

More shows coming

More classics coming to Hangzhou include ballet Swan Lake by the Russian National Ballet Theatre, the French version of the classic musical Romeo and Juliet, which is praised for its skillful direction, stunning set design, and powerful performances, and Riverdance, the dance show that originated in Ireland in the mid-1990s and often toured Hangzhou before the pandemic. It also announced its comeback to Hangzhou in 2023.

Hangzhou Theater

Hangzhou Theater has released its plan of the year to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the venue, which consists of six parts: comedies, suspense, classic dramas, international dramas, children's carnivals and music lectures.

Some oversea artists have restarted their China tour plans.

Last November, Croatian pianist Maksim Mrvica, known for his unique style that blends classical music with contemporary genre toured to Hangzhou with his magnum opuses Croatian Rhapsody and The Flight of the Bumblebee. He was so well received that the theater decided to add another concert next month. Maksim, touched by the Hangzhou audience, promised to bring more programs to Hangzhou in 2023.

Japanese-Brazilian singer Lisa Ono, often referred to as the "Chief Bossa Nova Queen" because of her long-standing and influential career as Bossa Nova singer, almost toured to China every year before the pandemic. She will show up at Hangzhou Theatre this May.

Vienna Children's Choir, known as a national treasure of Austria, will also hit the Hangzhou stage. Founded over 500 years ago in 1498 as one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world, the world-renowned choir of young boys is trained in the Austrian choral tradition.
