Due to the late starting, Chinese animation products obviously lagged behind until July 2009 when the United States Nickelodeon cartoon channel first broadcasted Zoland’s Magic Wonderland. This was a landmark that the Chinese cartoons entered the US mainstream media.
Going out strategy has brought benefits to Zoland. It also encourages a batch of its Hangzhou peers. Since 2008, Hangzhou animation companies have started to take the international standards, forming the Hangzhou Style by learning from others, while “selling” their own products. Hence, apart from the China International Cartoon and Animation Festival-CICAF, a bunch of platforms have been set up to promote the export of the animation products.
Gene3: Science & Technology Competitiveness
In May, on the 12th China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, a cute robot named A.U Rabbit was introduced to visitors. It can not only answer inquiries about the festival but can greet visitors. This robot bunny is also made in Hangzhou. Its owner, Hangzhou A.U Cultural Creativity Co., Ltd. created a smart household robot, providing education and interactive entertainment services for young parents born in the 1980s and children aged 3-10. The bunny stars the series animation “A.U”.
Scientific and technological innovation is an important driving force in the development of animation industry. In Hangzhou, the animation entrepreneurs are devoted to exploring an ever-upgrading road. Millions of RMB yuan are invested into R&D in VR, AR, and 3D, etc. Hopefully, a new industrial model of animation+VR will soon be seen in Hangzhou.
